Lyrics
CLOSE TO ME Went for a ride, looking at the sunset on my own. Days at a time, we’re hungry in a world that feels alone. I wanna see a smile, that isn't pixelated hidden woes. She's but a child, I wonder where we'll be when she's all grown. I wanna feel you close to me. I wanna hear the sound of you breathe right here where you can look at me. Hey just you wait we'll make it out okay. The world's on fire, and those carrying torches aren't sent home. No not the liars, they are still in glass houses throwing stones. I wanna feel you close to me. I wanna hear the sound of you breathe right here where you can look at me. Hey just you wait we'll make it out okay. I wanna hear you pray to bring on a new day. And I wanna chase those fears away. Wanna get your dreams to stay, in this new day we'll live in a new way. I take life in stride, just being here's a luxury I'm told. We will survive, so long as we have hope and don't let go. You hold me tight, and I feel like we're never getting old. It's worth the fight, to turn our little stories into gold. Never getting old. Never letting go. Never letting go. I wanna feel you close to me. I wanna hear the sound of you breathe right here where you can look at me. Hey just you wait we'll make it out okay.
LET HER GO She was born far away. Fled for her life, she's far from her home. Waiting there in the crowd, you could see that she came here alone. You looked over the wall beyond boundaries and showed the way home. She knows nothing of life where we are. She can’t do it alone. Just keep her safe. Don't let them take her. Don't let her go. You can defend her life show her love but please take it slow. Only you can protect her from the cruel world that she knows. Just keep her safe. Don't let them take her. Don't let her go. She belongs in a world where she can live and love it too. Show her people can love beyond differences and she'll stand by you. Don't let them wake her up from the spell you put her under. Let her know it's the way that we all wish it was, and we'll make them surrender. Just keep her safe. Don't let them take her. Don't let her go. You can defend her life show her love but please take it slow. Only you can protect her from the cruel world that she knows. Just keep her safe. Don't let them take her. Don't let her go. The world can be cruel but we all deserve to see the light. There are more of us here and together we stand guard in the night. All we want is a world that is free beyond just what we’ve seen. Please hold your loved ones close, it is your job to show them what peace means. Just keep her safe. Don't let them take her. Don't let her go. You can defend her life show her love but please take it slow. Only you can protect her from the cruel world that she knows. Just keep her safe. Don't let them take her. Don't let her go.
AFTERGLOW Joey got on a plane for San Francisco, just one of the things we said we'd do. It's not everyday you call and they go, it’s not every day they say they will. Nancy left to buy a raincoat. Holding in her breath to quell the chill. Her lungs on fire of smoke and maple. Love ain’t as sweet without a thrill. The look in your eyes when it gets quiet. Caught in the light of afterglow sighs. Poems we wrote, sitting on the bed and making songs up in our heads about the places that we’ve been and loving. Rhiannon flies from Montenegro, the judgement day lords sleeping still. Late night spent wandering to Castro. All you can drink 10 dollar bill. The look in your eyes when it gets quiet. Caught in the light of afterglow sighs. Poems we wrote, sitting on the bed and making songs up in our heads about the places that we’ve been and loving you We write the songs that you dream about at night. The artists told you how to keep me up so I Can watch the sun rise through the foggy window pane. Already in your arms, no need to be ashamed Got a hotel room in Kyoto, high off your carbon heartbeat pill. Made love with hands tied round the bed posts. I am the ocean drink your fill. The look in your eyes when it gets quiet. Caught in the light of afterglow sighs. Poems we wrote, sitting on the bed and making songs up in our heads about the places that we’ve been and loving you
GOLDEN GATE He found her dancing in the city streets. She was so lost in time, don't know how we found the city. He saw darkness in the world. The only light that shown, this goddess of a girl. The city never sleeps and neither does Sir Anthoney. Writing by candlelight and peddling by day. He could never find his way. Until the night lit up the bay, and she’d say. Darling can you feel the rain wash away all of your suffering? I promise you it’s worth the wait, to leave this story up to fate. Please don’t leave me in this way on golden gate. His eyes were shadowed by the moon. Lips were parted as he sang a song that had no tune. Stuck in a world that had no mind. He saw her face spinning through time. She’s saying. Darling can you feel the rain, wash away all of your suffering. I promise you it’s worth the wait, to leave this story up to fate. Please don’t leave me in this way, on golden gate. Their love made light of what it could. One still working too hard, one was never understood. The ones you want to hold you close, are the ones who have seen your ghosts. The raven dancing in the den, is who you’ll believe in the end. The world will never sleep and you are all Sir Anthoney. Writing by candle light and peddling by day. Your souls are all floating away, there's nothing you can hear them say. They’re saying. Darling can you feel the rain? Wash away all of your suffering. I promise you it’s worth the wait, to leave this story up to fate. Please don’t leave me in this way.
RIDING HIGH I took a song off this record, cause that's something I can do. People always said they liked it but that's alright. I've got nothing to prove. I wrote this song after hours, just sitting in the dark. I miss the painted flowers, and the gallery art. And one day I’ll get on a plane to New York or LA but for now I’m here, sitting alone in my small town until the coast is clear. I wanna go for a drive. Like we’re flying away from all of the ways we should behave, let's have the time of our lives. We’ll climb on trains and walk in the rain, and know if you fall it’s all part of the ride. I’m riding high. The songs on the radio all play on overtime. Just give me a classic, at least something that rhymes, or give me nothing. The white noise all around won’t tell you something. I wanna go for a drive. Like we’re flying away from all of the ways we should behave, let’s have the time of our lives. We’ll climb on trains and walk in the rain, and know if you fall it’s all part of the ride. I’m riding high. I want so much from my stories, trip over my own feet. It’s all an allegory. If something I've said makes you run your fist right through a mirror, okay then do it. But I wish you’d take a breath and look into it. I took a song off this record because that's something I can do. Even though they said they liked it, that's alright. I had room for something new.
LATE AUGUST PATCHWORK (SO CLOSE) Dirty plates on the table. We’re talking in circles. We gotta get this done before the kids show up. Remember white knuckles. I miss how he chuckles. We gotta finish up and get back home. So close, we’re in control. You are the only one I want to hold. So close. Before we’re cold, we’ll be livin’ in a world that we can save and we’ll be home. Got back on a weekend. My days on repeat man. They dragged me to the club just to loosen up. Your tie dye teddy bear got me through it my dear, all the teaching from books that no one wrote. So close. So close. Driving through the city, I learned how to let be the fact that I had nothing that feels like home. Wake up to a new dawn. The world around moves on. A week feels like a year then all that’s gone. So close. So close. So close, we’re in control. You are the only one I want to hold. So close. Before we’re cold, we’ll be livin’ in a world that we can save and we’ll be home.
PLAYGROUND Come on Susie come out and play. The ghosts are gone and it’s safe to come around to the playground. Will you let me? Will you let me take your hand? Take you on the merry go round again? Come on Susie come out and play. The ghosts are gone and it’s safe to come around to the playground. Can you see me? Can you see me in your eyes? Would you come and dance with me in the ocean skies? Oh the summer time has gone for me, my love. And the winter’s only taught of pain and love. Oh can I see you step outside? I just wanna see how bright you’re shining in the moonlight. Come on Susie come out and play. The ghosts are gone and it’s safe to come around to the playground. Will you let me? Will you let me take your hand? Take you on the merry go round again? Teach you how to fall in love again?
GET UP You left me dancing on the side of the road baby. If only I could walk on water for you. You heard me crying when the moments got colder baby. If I only hadn't wanted to hold you. We all dream of faster cars and teenage runaways. With empty hearts, we hold on anyways. Nothing' left in our pockets after all we gave, it's the price you pay. How did I love you anyway? Oh we got real close to the neon lights. So close I let them burn me. Oh you were heaven wrapped up in a jar. Then you broke the glass and hurt me. We all dream of faster cars and teenage runaways. With empty hearts, we hold on anyways. Nothing' left in our pockets after all we gave, it's the price you pay. How did I let you get away? Get up. Hey let me lift your head up. Get up. Hey let me lift your head up. Get up. Hey let me lift your head up. Get up. Hey let me lift your head up. We all dream of faster cars and teenage runaways. With empty hearts, we hold on anyway. Nothing' left in our pockets after all we gave, it's the price you pay. How could I love you anyway? How did I let you get away? Get up. Hey let me lift your head up. Get up. Hey let me lift your head up. Get up. Hey let me lift your head up. Get up. Hey let me lift your head up. (Get up. Hey let me lift your...)
OVERPASS You came to visit me one day in our small town we drove around so late at night. With our sanity held over us you reached to grab my hand and hold me tight. We drove and drove til we got lost just trying to escape the plots of people who just take what isn’t free. “Well at least I've got you” we said while all the thoughts flew out our head, of bigger worlds for you to see and how this one’s too small for me. Oh, live somewhere I can ride a train and watch life through a window pane and not long for an unfamiliar face. The skyline glows like hand blown glass when you're stuck on the overpass among chaos and opportunity. Yeah that's the place I wanna be. My uncle asked you like it here and I just laughed and shrugged “yeah, it's okay”. This town's just got big houses full of people I don't wanna be someday. There's no room left for me to grow, that's something you'd already know or why the hell'd you ask me anyway? My family lives right down the way I guess we’ll all move on someday. A world too big for all to see and still it feels too small for me. Oh, live somewhere I can ride a train and watch life through a window pane and not long for an unfamiliar face. The skyline glows like hand blown glass when you're stuck on the overpass among chaos and opportunity. Yeah that's the place I wanna be. We drove my new car for the first time on your last night. How life flies like my youth out the window oh where did the time go. Be 20 by sunrise, you'll wake under new skies, our childhood is gone now let's get on the highway of our lives. Mr Reid playing on the phonograph can’t shake that I ain’t feeling much inside. Feel like I live a double life with you and here when will I get this right? I don’t know what I’m waiting for but working hard feels like a chore, don't know what I expected it to be. I won't let my fear get to me, my dreams will bring me ecstasy, I know you don’t believe in me, One day I’ll know the melody, You’ll sing my own words back to me. We’ll build a world where they’re all free. You’ll ride my coattails at a ball, and we’ll still be here through it all and Oh, live somewhere I can ride a train and watch the city when it rains, without feeling like all that time is a waste. I'll people watch while I drink tea and find parks that inspire me and I will always have new things to see. In the city I'll be free. You can tell me that it's my life. But will I ever get it right? They all tell me that it’s all my life. will I ever get it right? Oh, live somewhere I can ride a train and watch life through a window pane and not long for an unfamiliar face. The skyline glows like hand blown glass when you're stuck on the overpass among chaos and opportunity. Yeah that's the place I wanna be.

Our heartfelt thank you to everyone who gave their time and talent to make this record come together. Collaboration has been the goal from day one, and to have so many people spend time with our music, come spend time in the studio, and contribute their own tracks was the most rewarding part of this process. There are far too many to name, (as the list includes friends and family who came to listen for the fun of it) but to every single person who came into Sleeper Cave with us over the past year, thank you!
Let’s Work Together
Get in touch so we can start working together.
